On this page, the Turning Point tools are organized by overall subject. These five focus areas were chosen after we asked concerned professionals in national, state, and community organizations to tell us what they needed to improve health. They requested help in five important areas listed below.

Collaborative Leadership: Learning to build diverse and effective coalitions to promote health for people and communities.
Social Marketing: Promoting voluntary healthy behavior change that leads to improved outcomes.
Information Technology: Researching and comparing technologies to find the ones best suited for an organization.
Performance Management: Measuring and driving system-wide performance improvements.
Statute Modernization: Reviewing public health laws to ensure that states can effectively promote and defend the public’s health.
Collaborative leadership embraces a process in which people with different views and perspectives come together, set aside narrow self-interests, and discuss issues openly and supportively in an attempt to find ways of helping each other solve a larger problem or achieve broader goals. The goal of the Turning Point Leadership Development National Excellence Collaborative was to increase collaborative leadership capacity at all levels of public health practice. Social marketing is the use of marketing principles to influence human behavior in order to improve health or benefit society. The goals of the Turning Point Social Marketing National Excellence Collaborative included building social marketing skills; providing tools to increase social marketing effectiveness; advocating for increased institutional support for social marketing; and increasing resources for applying social marketing to public health interventions. Information technology is a valuable tool for effectively collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information to further the goals of public health. The mission of the Turning Point Information Technology National Excellence Collaborative was to assess, evaluate, and recommend to national policy makers innovative ways to improve the nation's public health infrastructure by utilizing information technology. Performance management is the practice of actively using performance data to improve the public's health. The Turning Point Performance Management National Excellence Collaborative was a group of representatives from seven states and five national partner organizations who worked to study and promote the use of performance management systems in public health. Public health laws affect many conditions that impact health, including defining a government's powers to control disease, and setting standards of privacy, due process, and risk assessment. The primary purpose of the Turning Point Statute Modernization National Excellence Collaborative was to transform and strengthen the legal framework for the public health system by development of a model public health law. The model state public health infrastructure law defines governments' duties and authorities for protecting and promoting the public's health, and is available for state legislatures' consideration.
